‘The Ghost Project’ is a series of images created ‘in camera’ by Mara during her mothers fight against cancer. During this time Mara was the primary emotional support for her mother, eventually also leaving her job to care for her during the final stages. It is easy in such circumstances to become lost, losing your identity as an illness not only comes to define the patient but also their immediate family. ‘Mara’ faded into the background to be replaced by a new identity of ‘Nancy’s Daughter’. Love is a strong and powerful emotion, allowing us to endure and cope with things we never thought we could. The camera can be a therapist, allowing a conversation with ourselves we can have through no other medium than art.
Nancy lived to see many of the images created but inevitably the conclusion of the project came after her passing. In addition to the series of images, the project was turned into a book with the same name. Both the images and book have been exhibited nationally with a copy of the book now being held in the special collection at the University of Kent.
